Agitated gas-liquid systems are widely used in industrial processes, e.g. oxidation, clorination, fermentation and waste water treatment. The performance of these systems is measured by the gas-holdup together with the bubble size and bubble size distribution which determine the interfacial area.
Disk turbines have been frequently used for gas-liquid dispersion. Disk impellers force the sparged bubbles to move through a shear zone close to the impeller tip. Flooding occurs if excessive quantity of bubbles bypass along the shaft, thus reducing gas-holdup.
The Vertical Linear Motion mixer (VLM) provides the best alternative for gas-liquid dispersion which improves gas-holdup thus enhancing mass transfer.
