Immiscible liquid-liquid systems are found throughout the chemical, petroleum and pharmaceutical industries. Mixing plays a major role in liquid-liquid systems by influencing drop dispersion, coalescence and suspension or droplets. The control of mean drop size and the drop mean size distribution is critical to emulsification and suspension applications.
Rotary Mixers are Challenged
Mixing of shear sensitive liquids by rotary mixers is a challenge since the maximum impeller speed is limited to avoid “shearing” of the liquids.
The VLM mixer provides an excellent mix, by produces “small scale” isotropic eddies which enhance mixing of shear-sensitive liquids. The liquid-liquid animation (below) depicts the performance of VLM mixer. The water-oil system is uniformly mixed without forming an emulsion phase.
